GEICO Windshield Replacement in Raleigh, NC: From Claim to Driveway

Most of what people want to know about GEICO windshield replacement is practical. Who comes, where, how long it takes, and when the car can be driven again. This page answers those questions for drivers in central Raleigh, and it covers the GEICO glass claim that pays for the work: how it is usually reported, the North Carolina rule that lets you pick the glass company, and the same rules for a broken door window or back glass.

RaleighAutoGlass.org is run by Impex Auto Glass. Impex is independent of GEICO and of every other insurer, and it works with all major insurance providers. GEICO is named on this page only because it is the insurer whose claim is explained here; none of the wording is GEICO’s. Your policy, and GEICO, decide what is covered and what you pay.

Book the glass, then the claim is easy

Tell Impex the vehicle, the damage and where the car will be parked. Mention that GEICO insures it, and Impex will help with the claim.

The GEICO glass claim in brief

In North Carolina, glass breakage is normally covered under comprehensive. The NC Department of Insurance describes comprehensive as paying the cost of repair ‘less any deductible’, and it names ‘Breakage of glass’ and ‘Missiles or falling objects’ among the losses. A rock off the Beltline, a limb in a storm and a break-in all fit that description. Your comprehensive deductible applies unless your policy includes full glass coverage, and North Carolina has no law that waives it for glass.

  1. Check your declarations page for comprehensive coverage and its deductible.
  2. Report the GEICO glass claim the way your policy documents give you: by phone, online or in the app.
  3. Say it is glass damage, which glass it is, when and how it happened.
  4. Say you want Impex Auto Glass to do the work, and note the claim number.
  5. Give Impex the claim and policy numbers, or ask Impex to help with the claim from the start.

Impex’s own claims guide says it handles the insurance claim process for you, with direct insurance billing. If you would rather make one call instead of two, call Impex first and ask how that works with your GEICO policy.

Choosing Impex for a GEICO claim

North Carolina leaves this choice to you. G.S. 58-3-180 says a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle ‘shall allow the claimant to select the repair service or source for the repair of the damage’, and that the amount owed ‘shall be paid regardless of the repair service or source selected by the claimant.’ When an insurer recommends a shop, it has to tell you that you do not have to use it, that you may use the shop of your choice, that the payment is the same, and whether it has a financial interest in the shop. The NC Department of Insurance puts it simply: an insurance company cannot require you to go to a particular repair shop.

So GEICO windshield replacement by Impex is a choice you make on the claim, not a favor you ask for. Impex does not need to be named in your policy, and the claim pays the same.

Where the visit happens Inside the Beltline

Impex’s service in Raleigh is mobile. The technician brings the glass to where the car is parked, so the visit is planned around the spot rather than around a shop counter. Central Raleigh has every kind of spot, and each needs a word when you book.

  • A driveway at home, in Five Points or Oakwood for example: usually the simplest. Say whether there is a carport or garage.
  • A parking deck downtown or in Glenwood South: say which level and whether there is room beside the car to open the doors fully. Some decks have rules about work being done in them, so check with the building.
  • Curbside on a busy street, such as near Hillsborough Street: say how long the car can stay there and whether there is a quieter spot nearby.
  • An apartment or shopping center lot, around Cameron Village for example: say which building and where the car usually sits.

Weather matters for any mobile glass job. The adhesive that holds a windshield in needs the right conditions, so if rain is coming and there is no cover, the visit may be moved to a better day. Telling Impex about cover when you book helps keep the date.

On the day: the replacement and the camera

Impex checks the glass against your car by VIN before the visit, so the windshield that arrives fits your exact model and its sensors. At the car, the technician removes the damaged glass, prepares the frame, sets the new windshield and refits what was mounted to the old one. Impex puts this at about one hour, plus a short curing period.

On a car with lane departure warning, collision braking or adaptive cruise control, the forward camera behind the mirror is part of the job. I-CAR lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require that camera to be aimed again, and says the requirements vary by year, make and model. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after the windshield replacement and can complete static and dynamic calibrations in one visit, which it says take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Ask at the claim stage whether calibration is included, so the GEICO glass claim covers the whole job.

The 24 hours after

Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours of a windshield replacement. The Auto Glass Safety Council explains why that waiting time exists: the windshield is part of the car’s passenger restraint system and helps the airbags deploy properly, and the safe drive-away time depends on the adhesive and the conditions on the day. Once you are driving:

  • Skip the car wash for 24 hours.
  • Close the doors gently for 24 hours rather than slamming them.
  • Follow any other aftercare the technician gives you for your car.
  • If a warning light about the camera appears, call Impex rather than ignoring it.

Not the windshield? Door and back glass on a GEICO claim

A door window or back glass smashed in a break-in is the same kind of claim as a windshield: glass breakage under comprehensive, with the same deductible and the same right to choose who does the work. The jobs are different, though.

WindshieldAbout one hour, plus a short curing periodMost cars back on the road within two hours

Back glassOne to two hoursAvoid the rear defroster for 24 hours

Until the visit, cover an open window with heavy plastic taped to the paint rather than to the glass, take valuables out of the car, and photograph the damage before anything is moved. Those photos help both the claim and the technician. If the car has to be moved before the visit, drive it gently with the windows up on the good side, and tell Impex where it ended up.

Points, renewals and the deductible

North Carolina’s Safe Driver Incentive Plan charges points for convictions and at-fault accidents, according to the NCDOI, and a glass claim is neither, so a GEICO glass claim adds no SDIP points. Insurers may still look at how often you file claims when they decide on renewals, at fault or not. For a small chip, compare the repair with your deductible before claiming. Our pages on full glass coverage and on whether comprehensive covers a windshield explain both sides, and the guides to Progressive windshield replacement and State Farm windshield replacement cover the filing steps and the claim-or-pay decision in more depth.

Questions drivers ask

Does GEICO cover windshield replacement in North Carolina?

If your GEICO policy includes comprehensive coverage, glass breakage normally falls under it, less your comprehensive deductible. Check your declarations page or ask GEICO to confirm what your policy pays.

Can Impex Auto Glass do my GEICO windshield replacement?

Yes. North Carolina’s G.S. 58-3-180 lets you choose the repair service, and the payment is the same whichever you choose. Impex is independent of GEICO and works with all major insurance providers.

Where in Raleigh does Impex do the work?

Where your car is parked: a driveway, a parking deck, a lot or the curb. Tell Impex about the spot when you book. See the service areas.

Is a broken side window a GEICO glass claim too?

Usually, yes: glass breakage is a comprehensive loss in North Carolina, with the same deductible and the same right to choose the shop. Impex says a side window takes 30 to 60 minutes and can be driven straight away.

How soon can I drive after a new windshield?

Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours of a windshield replacement. The technician tells you when it is safe, because the time depends on the adhesive and the weather.
