If Progressive insures your car and the windshield is cracked, the job usually starts as a Progressive glass claim under the comprehensive part of your policy. This page walks a Raleigh driver through Progressive windshield replacement from the first look at the damage to the moment the car is safe to drive, and it spends the most time on the part people find hardest: what to say when the claim line suggests a glass shop, and why North Carolina law lets you choose your own.

RaleighAutoGlass.org is run by Impex Auto Glass. Impex is independent of Progressive and of every other insurer; it works with all major insurance providers, and Progressive’s name is on this page only because it is the insurer whose claim the page explains. Nothing here is Progressive’s own wording or policy. Your policy documents and your Progressive agent have the final word on what your policy pays.

Three short steps: where the damage is, your vehicle and how to reach you. Mention that Progressive insures the car, and Impex will help with the claim.
Before you report it: is this a claim at all?
Not every cracked windshield needs a claim. The first question is whether the glass can be repaired, and the second is how the cost compares with your comprehensive deductible.
Impex’s rule for a repair is damage that is small, shallow and away from the edges. The published repair standard, ROLAGS, treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable, and a common rule of thumb in the trade is a chip smaller than a quarter. A crack that reaches the edge of the glass, a break right in the driver’s view, or damage where the camera behind the mirror looks out usually means the windshield has to come out.
If it is a repair, the cost may be below your deductible, and paying directly can be easier. If it is a replacement on a car with a forward camera, the glass plus the calibration is the kind of bill where a Progressive glass claim tends to make sense. Our page on full glass coverage explains what changes if your policy carries it.
How a Progressive glass claim usually runs
Every insurer has its own phone menus, app screens and forms, and they change. What stays the same in North Carolina is the shape of a glass claim. These are the steps most Raleigh drivers go through.
- Find your policy number and coverage. Your declarations page shows whether you carry comprehensive and what its deductible is. Without comprehensive, ask your agent how glass damage is treated before you go further.
- Write down what happened. The date, the road, and the cause in plain words: a stone from a truck on I-40, a branch on Glenwood Avenue, a break-in on a downtown street. Take a photo of the damage with something for scale.
- Report the claim. Use the way your Progressive documents give you: by phone, online or in the app. Say it is glass damage under comprehensive, and say which glass: windshield, door glass, back glass.
- Name your glass company. Say you want Impex Auto Glass to do the work. You do not need anyone’s permission to choose; the section below explains why.
- Note the claim number. Impex will ask for it, along with your policy number, so the work can be billed against the claim.
- Book the visit. Impex orders the glass by your VIN and agrees a time and a place with you in Raleigh.
- Pay your share. Usually that is your comprehensive deductible, unless your policy has full glass coverage.
If you would rather not do the reporting alone, call Impex first. Impex’s own claims guide says it handles the insurance claim process for you, with direct insurance billing; ask when you call how that will work for your Progressive policy.
When the claim line suggests a shop
Many drivers report a glass claim and are offered a shop on the same call. That is allowed. What is not allowed in North Carolina is making you use it, and the law spells out what you must be told.
G.S. 58-3-180(a) says a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle ‘shall allow the claimant to select the repair service or source for the repair of the damage.’ Part (b) says the amount owed ‘shall be paid regardless of the repair service or source selected by the claimant.’ Part (b1) says that if an insurer recommends a shop, it must tell you that you are under no obligation to use it, that you may use the shop of your choice, that the payment is the same either way, and whether it has a financial interest in the shop it recommends. An insurer may not require repair at a shop it owns, and a violation can bring a civil penalty of up to $2,000 each time.
What to say on the call
‘This is a comprehensive glass claim. I would like Impex Auto Glass to replace the windshield. Please note that on the claim.’ If you are offered another shop, you can say: ‘Thank you, I am choosing my own repair service under North Carolina law.’
You do not need to argue the point, and you do not need to know the statute number. The NC Department of Insurance says it in one line in its consumer FAQ: an insurance company cannot require you to go to a particular repair shop. If anything on the call leaves you unsure, hang up, call Impex, and Impex can help you put the claim in order.
What the claim should cover on a newer car
On many cars sold in recent years, a windshield is not just glass. The forward camera mounted behind the rearview mirror reads the road through it, and that camera runs lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control. I-CAR, the collision industry’s training body, lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require that camera to be aimed again, and it tells repairers to look up each manufacturer’s requirements because they vary by year, make and model.
Calibration comes in two kinds. Static calibration uses targets set up in front of the parked car while a scan tool runs the aiming procedure. Dynamic calibration means driving the car at or below a set speed for a set time or distance, on roads clear enough for the camera to read. Some cameras need both. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after windshield replacement, and its technicians can complete both kinds in one visit. Impex says most calibrations take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
When you report your Progressive windshield replacement, ask whether the calibration is part of the same claim, so that you are not left with a second bill for it. Front radar is a different matter: it usually sits in the bumper or grille, so a windshield job alone does not normally touch it.
The day of the job in Raleigh
Impex’s service in Raleigh is mobile, so the work happens wherever the car will be: the driveway at home, the deck under the office, the curb outside an apartment. Tell Impex where that is when you book, and whether there is cover overhead, because rain and urethane do not mix well and a visit can be moved if the weather will not allow the work to be done properly.
- Clear the dashboard and take anything you need out of the car.
- Have the keys ready, and the claim number if Impex does not already have it.
- Expect the replacement itself to take about an hour, plus a short curing period. Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours.
- If the camera needs calibrating, add the 30 minutes to 2 hours Impex quotes for that.
The wait before driving matters more than it looks. The Auto Glass Safety Council says the windshield is part of the car’s passenger restraint system and helps the airbags deploy properly, and it explains that the safe drive-away time depends on the adhesive used and the weather at the time. For the next 24 hours, Impex’s aftercare advice is to avoid car washes and to close the doors gently.
After the claim: what to check on the bill
Once the work is done, the paperwork should show your deductible and the amount billed to the claim. Impex describes its quotes as fully inclusive, with no hidden fees, upsells, delivery charges, fuel fees or disposal fees, so the number you are quoted is the number you should see. If your policy has full glass coverage and you were still asked for a deductible, call your agent and ask why before you pay.
A Progressive glass claim under comprehensive is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. The NCDOI does say that many insurers look at how often you file claims when they decide on renewals, at fault or not. Our page on whether comprehensive covers a windshield has the detail, and the homepage guide to glass claims in Raleigh covers the whole process for any insurer.
Other insurers, same rules
Nothing on this page is special to one insurance company. The comprehensive coverage, the deductible, the right to choose the shop and the SDIP rules are North Carolina’s, and they apply to every auto policy written here. If a family member’s car is insured elsewhere, the same steps work; we have also written them up for State Farm windshield replacement and GEICO windshield replacement, each with a different part of the job in focus.

Questions drivers ask
Does Progressive pay for windshield replacement in North Carolina?
If your Progressive policy includes comprehensive coverage, glass breakage is normally covered under it, less your comprehensive deductible. Check your declarations page or ask your agent, because your policy decides what is paid.
Do I have to use the glass shop Progressive suggests?
No. North Carolina’s G.S. 58-3-180 lets you choose the repair service, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever you pick. If a shop is recommended, you must be told you are under no obligation to use it.
Can Impex Auto Glass help with my Progressive glass claim?
Yes. Impex works with all major insurance providers and says it handles the claim process for you. Have your policy number ready when you call, and the claim number if you already have one.
Is Impex a Progressive shop?
Impex Auto Glass is independent of Progressive and every other insurer. You can choose Impex for a Progressive claim because North Carolina law lets every claimant choose.
Will a Progressive glass claim add points to my policy?
A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no SDIP points in North Carolina. Insurers may still consider how often you file claims.
How long does a windshield replacement take in Raleigh?
Impex says about one hour plus a short curing period, with most cars back on the road within two hours. Camera calibration, when needed, adds 30 minutes to 2 hours.
