State Farm Windshield Replacement in Raleigh, NC: Decide Before You Dial

A State Farm glass claim is easy to start and easy to get wrong in small ways: claiming for a chip that cost less than the deductible, forgetting to ask about the camera, or assuming the shop is chosen for you. This page is about the decisions a Raleigh driver makes before reporting State Farm windshield replacement, so the claim that goes in is the right one, for the right job, done by the company you picked.

This site is run by Impex Auto Glass, which is independent of State Farm and every other insurer. Impex works with all major insurance providers. State Farm’s name appears here only because this page explains a claim on a State Farm policy; nothing on it is State Farm’s own wording. What your policy pays is decided by your policy and by State Farm, so keep your declarations page close while you read.

Find out what the job is first

Send the vehicle and the damage and Impex comes back with a quote, so you can compare it with your deductible before you claim. Mention State Farm if you plan to claim.

Decision one: repair or replace

The State Farm windshield replacement that costs least is the one that turns out to be a repair. Resin repair fills a chip or a short crack so it stops spreading, and the glass stays in the car. Whether that is possible depends on three things at once: the size of the damage, how deep it goes, and where it sits.

What you seeWhat it usually means
A chip smaller than a quarter, away from the edgeOften repairable (a rule of thumb, not a rule)
A single crack, short and not near the edgeCan be repairable: the ROLAGS standard allows single line cracks up to 14 inches
A crack that reaches the edge of the glassUsually a replacement: the edge is where the windshield is bonded to the car
Damage right in front of the driverOften a replacement, because a repair can leave a blemish in your line of sight
Damage where the camera behind the mirror looks outNeeds a careful look; a replacement brings camera calibration with it

Impex sums up its own test in a line: a repair may be possible when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges. The technician makes the final call at the car, and if a repair would not hold or would leave the driver looking through a flaw, the windshield is replaced.

Decision two: claim or pay

Glass damage normally falls under comprehensive coverage in North Carolina. The NC Department of Insurance says comprehensive pays ‘the cost of repair or ACV of your automobile less any deductible’, and it lists ‘Breakage of glass’ among the losses covered. So the second decision is simple arithmetic: what the job costs against what your deductible is.

  • If the job costs less than your deductible, a claim would pay nothing. Pay directly.
  • If the job costs a little more, the claim pays the difference. Weigh that against having one more claim on your history.
  • If it is a full windshield with camera calibration on a newer car, the bill is a bigger one, and that is where a State Farm glass claim is most likely to make sense.
  • If your policy includes full glass coverage, the arithmetic changes in your favor. Our page on full glass coverage explains what that means and how to check.

North Carolina has no law that takes the deductible off glass, unlike Florida for windshields or South Carolina for all safety glass. So do not count on paying nothing unless your own policy says so. Impex’s quotes are fully inclusive, with no hidden fees, upsells, delivery charges, fuel fees or disposal fees, which makes the comparison with your deductible a fair one.

Decision three: what to ask before you report it

A few questions, asked once, save most of the trouble a State Farm glass claim can bring. Ask your agent, or read your declarations page, before you start.

  1. Do I have comprehensive, and what is the deductible? If you have no comprehensive coverage, ask how glass damage is treated before you assume it is paid.
  2. Is there separate glass coverage on my policy? Some policies include full glass coverage. Check yours.
  3. Is camera calibration covered with the windshield? On a car with lane departure warning or collision braking, the forward camera behind the mirror may need calibrating after the glass is replaced. Make sure the claim covers the whole job.
  4. How will the bill be paid? Ask whether the glass company bills the claim directly, and what you pay on the day.

Decision four: who does the work

This decision is yours by law. G.S. 58-3-180(a) says a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle ‘shall allow the claimant to select the repair service or source for the repair of the damage’, and part (b) says the insurer pays the same amount whichever you select. If an insurer recommends a shop, part (b1) says it must tell you that you are under no obligation to use it, that the payment is the same either way, and whether it has a financial interest in the shop. No insurer may require repair at a shop it owns.

For a State Farm windshield replacement in Raleigh, that means you can report the claim and say you want Impex Auto Glass to do the work. The claim is not weaker for it, and the payment does not change. If you would rather have help with the reporting, call Impex first: Impex’s claims guide says it handles the insurance claim process for you, including direct insurance billing, and that you have the legal right to choose your repair company.

One claim, one company

If a shop is suggested to you on the call and you have already chosen Impex, say so and ask that Impex is noted on the claim. You do not need to give a reason.

What the replacement involves

Once the claim is in, the job itself is quick. Impex checks the glass against your car by VIN, so the part that arrives is the right one for your exact model and its sensors. In Raleigh the work is mobile: the technician takes out the damaged windshield, cleans the frame, sets the new glass in urethane and refits the mirror, the trim and anything else mounted to the glass.

Then comes the camera. I-CAR lists removing the windshield as an event that may require the forward camera to be aimed again, and it says the requirements vary by year, make and model. Static calibration uses targets in front of the parked car; dynamic calibration means a drive at a set speed on suitable roads; some cameras need both. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after windshield replacement, can do both kinds in one visit, and says most calibrations take 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Impex puts the windshield itself at about one hour plus a short curing period, with most cars back on the road within two hours. The Auto Glass Safety Council explains that the windshield is part of the passenger restraint system and helps keep people inside the car in a crash, so the drive-away time is not a formality. For 24 hours afterwards, skip the car wash and close the doors gently.

After a State Farm glass claim

A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, and North Carolina’s Safe Driver Incentive Plan charges points only for convictions and at-fault accidents, so the claim adds no SDIP points. The NCDOI also notes that many insurers look at claim frequency, fault-free claims included, when they decide on renewals. That is one more reason to make decision two honestly: a claim for a big job is what the coverage is for; a string of small claims is what underwriters notice. Questions drivers ask

Does State Farm cover windshield replacement in NC?

If your State Farm policy includes comprehensive coverage, glass breakage normally falls under it, less your comprehensive deductible. Your declarations page or your agent will confirm what your own policy pays.

Should I file a State Farm glass claim for a rock chip?

Compare the repair cost with your deductible first. If the repair costs less, a claim pays nothing and paying directly is simpler. Get a quote from Impex before you decide.

Can I choose Impex Auto Glass for a State Farm claim?

Yes. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose the repair service and the insurer pays the same amount either way. Impex is independent of State Farm and works with all major insurance providers.

Is windshield camera calibration part of the claim?

Ask when you report it, so the glass and the calibration are handled together. Impex calibrates the forward camera on site after the windshield when your car needs it.

Does a State Farm glass claim add SDIP points?

No SDIP points are charged for a comprehensive glass claim, because it is neither a conviction nor an at-fault accident. Insurers may still consider how often you claim.
